Description

The pair of houses at 15 and 17 Temple Street date back to the 16th century and have been altered in the 17th, mid-18th, and 20th centuries. Internal timber framing remains, with herringbone brick infill on the right side, evidence of the original jettied design. Number 15 was refaced in the 17th century with thin brick in English bond, incorporating some rubble stone in the plinth. It has an old tile roof and a brick chimney on the left side. The house is 1½ storeys high and one bay wide. The ground floor features barred wooden casements: a 3-light window to the left, a 2-light window within a blocked doorway to the right, and a small single light to the left. The first floor has 2 paired casements in a weatherboard surround beneath a single eyebrow of the roof. Access is via the rear. Number 17 was refaced in the mid-18th century using vitreous brick with red dressings, featuring a moulded plinth and a first-floor band course and eaves. Its hipped roof is covered with old tiles and includes a brick chimney on the rear. The house is two storeys high and one bay wide, with a late 19th-century shop front. Above the shop front are two renewed 4-pane sashes.
