Description

This building is a barn located approximately 5 meters northeast of Burton Hill Farmhouse in Dent. It is likely from the 17th and 19th centuries and has undergone alterations. The structure is made of mixed rubble with quoins and features slate and stone slate roofs. It has an L-shaped plan, with the main range running north-south, a lean-to cart shed on the west side, and a bank barn added to the east end.

The cart shed, which nearly spans the full width of the barn, has a cat-slide roof and includes two square-headed wagon doorways in the southern half, along with a smaller garage doorway at the north end. The south gable features one small and one large window at ground level, as well as a four-tiered pigeon-cote in the gable. The east side has through-stones on four levels, with a chamfered one-light window on each floor near the south end, a central doorway, and a small lean-to at the angle with the bank barn.

On the south side of the bank barn, there is a shippon doorway in the center, an oblong window to the left, and two small rectangular windows to the right. The north side has an outshut to the left with a cat-slide roof and a central wagon doorway that is protected by a pentice roof extending from it. The roof trusses date from the early 19th century.

This barn forms a group with Burton Hill Farmhouse and the washhouse to the north of it, and it shares a similar plan and development history with barns located at Gap and Hewthwaite.
