Description
Gale Garth Farmhouse is likely from the early 18th century and has undergone alterations. It is constructed of whitewashed rubble with quoins, and has a slate roof. The building is L-shaped, comprising a single-depth, two-unit main range facing south, a rear wing to the west unit, and a short side wing added to the west gable. The front of the farmhouse has two storeys and five windows, with a symmetrical facade and a stone slate drip course over the ground floor. A small gabled porch shelters an original studded oak door with strap hinges, a re-used iron hoop, and a wooden pull-handle. The ground floor is flanked by square windows with four-pane glazing, while the upper floor has five similar windows, except for a narrower window in the centre. Gable chimneys are present. A low, single-storey side wing is set back to the left, linking the house to a barn. The rear of the west wing has three windows offset over three levels, all with stone slate drip bands. The right-hand ground floor window and the upper left-hand window are oblong, with six lights, oak frames, a transom, and two chamfered mullions. These windows are particularly significant as a survival, given the large number of similar houses in the area and their often-altered glazing. The rear of the main range has through-stones over three levels and an altered fire window near the east end of the ground floor. Inside the house, the east wall of the right-hand room features muntin-and-rail panelling in at least three different forms, some panels carved with lozenges, arches, and scrolls. There is also a built-in spice cupboard to the right of the chimney-breast, with “I R / 1742” carved on the door, "T G 1669" on a panel above, and “G W 1864” below. A dog-legged staircase has an open string, turned balusters, and a simple handrail, while the first floor has muntin-and-plank panelled partitions. The farmhouse forms a group with the barn to the south and the barn linked to the west end.
