Description
The gate arch at the south-east corner of the garden of Gate in Dent is an entrance arch, likely from the 19th century, although it may be older and relocated. At the time of inspection in September 1994, it was slightly damaged. The arch is constructed of ashlar and designed in the Renaissance style. It features a Tudor-arched opening with a moulded surround in the upper half, flanked by narrow banded pilasters with fluted tops and volute supporters. Above, there is an entablature with a moulded cornice, a pulvinated frieze, and a prominent moulded upper cornice topped with a pediment, which is flanked by ball finials, although the finial on the left side is missing. This structure forms a group with Dairy Cottage opposite and with Gate.
