Description
Hewthwaite Farmhouse is likely from the early 18th century, with later alterations and extensions. It is constructed of whitewashed rubble with quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The farmhouse is a single-depth, two-unit plan arranged along an east-west axis facing south, with a gabled rear wing to the east and a prominent outshut set in the angle between the two. A lean-to outbuilding has been added to the east side of the outshut.
The exterior presents two storeys and a cellar, with three windows. A stone slate drip-course runs over the ground floor. A low-gabled porch is centrally positioned, featuring side benches, and is flanked by square, two-light casement windows with glazing bars. An enlarged fire-window is to the left of the porch, and a low cellar window sits below the porch to the right. At the first floor are two small, square eight-pane sash windows, with an inserted two-light casement to the left. Gable chimneys are present. The rear gable of the rear wing, built with through-stones, contains a three-light chamfered flush mullion window to the dairy, alongside the remains of a blocked two-light window. The outshut has a doorway, a chimney at the west corner, and a six-pane sash window in the side wall.
Inside, the ground floor has stone flagged floors. The entrance passage features an original plank-and-muntin panelled partition separating the parlour on the right from the housepart on the left; a slightly different plank-and-muntin partition divides the housepart and the left area. Inserted ceilings are in both the parlour and housepart. The housepart contains a large, rectangular stone fireplace with a moulded cornice, and an inserted kitchen range. A panelled cupboard is built into the former fire-window opening in the rear wall of the housepart. The dairy has stone shelves, and there's a doorway to the cellar, also with shelves. A dog-legged wooden staircase rises from the entrance passage. Original plank-and-muntin partitioning is found in the chamber over the dairy, and between the two chambers of the main range; inserted partitioning is in the chamber over the housepart. An original fireplace exists in the second chamber. The roof structure includes two pegged collar-trusses.
Hewthwaite Farmhouse forms a group with the barn to the north, barn to the south, and stable to the west.
