Description

Gap Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an attached laundry wing, now functioning as a single dwelling. It likely dates from the mid-18th century, with extensions added probably in the late 18th century and alterations, including the laundry wing, added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of mixed random rubble, with the front white-washed and a slate roof that includes some stone slate.

The farmhouse has a single-depth, two-unit plan oriented on an east-west axis, with an additional unit at the east end and the laundry wing at the west end. The exterior features two storeys and a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with a central small gabled porch that has a square-headed opening, stone side benches, and a stone slate roof, along with remnants of an earlier higher gable above. To the left of the porch is a 9-pane fixed window with one opening pane, and to the right is a large 16-pane sash window with renewed joinery. On the first floor, there is a small sash window to the left and a larger 4-pane sash window to the right. Rectangular chimneys are located at both former gables.

The added bay on the right has a ground floor 2-light casement window with glazing bars and a 9-pane sash window above, along with a square chimney at the right corner. The gable wall of this bay features a doorway and window at ground level, with through-stones on two levels above and a ball finial at the apex. The gable of the laundry wing on the left, which slightly protrudes, has a French window at ground level, a damaged 9-pane sash window on the first floor, and a small re-used round-headed window in the gable. The rear of the building includes small windows for the dairy and a first-floor loading door, along with a corner chimney for the laundry wing.

Inside, the main range has fielded panel partitions on the ground floor that enclose the dairy and a stone-winder staircase. There is an 18th-century stone fireplace with a corbelled lintel in the housepart. The laundry wing has a lower floor level, a cross-corner fireplace, and a servants' staircase.

Historically, the laundry wing served as the laundry for Gate House. The farmhouse forms a group with the barn located to the east.
