Description
Craggs Hill is a farmhouse, now a house, likely built in the early 18th century. It has been altered and was undergoing renovation at the time of inspection in September 1994. The building is constructed of roughly coursed mixed rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof. It has an L-plan layout, consisting of a single-depth, two-unit main range oriented north-south, facing east, with a rear wing on the right side and a stair-turret in the rear angle. The gable faces the road.
The exterior is two storeys high with five symmetrical windows. It includes a plinth, a stone slate drip-course over the ground floor, and a central gabled porch, which now has a concrete lintel. The fenestration is unusually regular for the area, featuring rectangular cross-windows on both floors, all with stone slate sills and monolith lintels, recently fitted with double glazing. There are corbelled chimneys at both gables, with the north end chimney corbelled from a lower level. The north return wall, including the side of the wing, has one window on the first floor and two on the ground floor. The rear of the house features a full-height stair-turret under a carried-down roof, with a mid-level stair-window, and a tall lean-to porch on the left side, along with one window on each floor to the left.
Inside, the front range has a former housepart on the right with two lateral beams (one of which has been renewed) and renewed joists. The former parlour on the left has two axial beams keyed for plaster. The rear wing contains a well-preserved early to mid-18th century dog-legged staircase, which has been recently restored. This staircase features a closed string, rectangular newels, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail, with the balustrade extending around the landing. The kitchen in the rear wing has a large lateral beam. Craggs Hill forms a group with the barn to the west.
