Description

Mire House is a farmhouse, now a dwelling, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, though a datestone on the porch reads 1635. The building was extended and altered subsequently. It is constructed of white-painted random rubble with quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The original plan was a single-depth two-unit layout, aligned east to west facing south. A full-height outshut was added to the rear, and a one-bay extension to the east end.

The exterior is two storeys high, with four windows, presenting an almost symmetrical facade (excluding the extension). A stone slate drip-course runs above the ground floor. The central gabled porch has a square-headed doorway, a panelled door, and a 20th-century datestone inscribed "1635". To the left of the porch is a square window containing two-light top-hung casements. A small four-pane sash window is to the left of that, formerly a fire-window, with two similar four-pane sashes to the right. The first floor has four similar small sash windows arranged symmetrically. A large corbelled chimney is located at the left gable, and a ridge chimney is at the junction to the right. The full-height extension to the right now has a garage door at ground floor level with no window above. The rear elevation features a full-height outshut containing a staircase and a former dairy.

The interior includes chamfered lateral beams and a spice-cupboard with a fielded panel door, found in the original housepart to the left. The housepart and dairy have been combined into one room, and the staircase has been altered. The property forms a group with a barn approximately 3 metres to the east.
