Description

This building is a barn located approximately 4 meters north of Hewthwaite Farmhouse in Dent. It is likely from the early to mid 18th century and consists of two construction phases, with some alterations. The barn is built from slobbered random rubble with through-stones and quoins, topped with stone slate roofs.

The structure is L-shaped, formed by an earlier 4-bay range oriented north-south, which is set at right angles to the slope and includes a shippon at the south end. A slightly later 4-bay range was added to the south end of the east side, running parallel to the slope, and also features a shippon beneath the hay barn. Additionally, there are two lean-to outbuildings on the west side of the earlier range.

The west range has opposed wagon doorways in the second bay, both featuring cambered oak lintels. The eastern doorway is set at a higher level and has the right-hand half blocked. There are full-height lean-to additions flanking the west doorway, with the left one being dilapidated and roofless, and a shippon doorway in the south gable wall. The other range has three shippon doorways on the south front, a loading doorway above, and a wagon doorway in the rear wall.

Inside, both ranges contain three collar trusses. The trusses in the west range are made from pairs of reused cruck timbers, which have stop-chamfer details, and the northern pair is mounted in a tie-beam that includes joist housings. The shippons have been altered over time.

This barn is part of a group that includes Hewthwaite Farmhouse, a barn to the south, and a stable to the west. It is similar in plan and construction phases to barns located at Burton Hill and Gap.
