BARTON TURF Turf Fen Mill

(Formerly listed as Turf Fen Windpump at TG 36971888)

II* Tower windpump. 1880. Brick with weatherboard cap. Three storey tapering tower. Door to east under segmental arch. One segmental window at first floor to north and south sides. Boat shaped cap with petticoat and fan cradle, the latter carrying fantail and machinery. All machinery survives including cast iron windshaft, crown wheel and pit wheel. Pit wheel drives two external scoop wheels through gearing allowing high and low ratios. Unique for double scoop wheels and gearing. Remains of stocks and sails under restoration.
