Description
Lockgate Mill is a derelict wind pump dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features an aluminium protective cap. The tower has a battered tarred finish, although much of the tar has weathered off. The structure is circular and consists of four storeys. There are two opposing ground-floor doors with arched heads, and on the first floor, there are two arched windows facing north and south, as well as two similar windows under the cap facing east and west. All windows have cast-iron glazing bars but are currently blocked with aluminium sheeting. On the south side, there is an external scoop wheel with remains of timber paddles.
Inside, the mill contains a cap frame with sheers, a head stock, and a weatherbeam. It also features a truck and centering wheels, a curb, track and rack, as well as a cast-iron windshaft and brakewheel with a brake arm. Additionally, there is a cast-iron upright drive shaft, a crown wheel, a pit wheel, and a horizontal drive shaft leading to the external scoop wheel. The drive shaft is stamped with the name "T. Smithdale, Norwich."
