War Memorial 4 Metres East Of The Chancel Of Holy Cross Church

The war memorial, located 4 metres east of the chancel of Holy Cross Church, was erected in 1921. It was designed and built by Messrs Moon and Sons of Guildford, with sculpture by J.E. Taylorson from Lavender Hill, London. Made of Portland stone, the memorial features a crucifix with hollow chamfered edges. The figure of Christ is carved in high relief from the stone. The shaft has a moulded base and stands on an octagonal pedestal, which is set on a stepped octagonal base.

The pedestal is inscribed with the words: "By the cross and passion, Good Lord deliver us. In loving remembrance, with thanksgiving and with all honour before God and man," and lists the names of 23 men who fell during the First World War, stating they "died gloriously in the service of their King and Country, between the years 1914 and 1918," along with Ernest George Cox, who died from gas poisoning in 1921. Additionally, there is a tablet on the top tier of the base commemorating 11 men who died in World War II.

The memorial was unveiled in November 1921 by Major General Sir Guy Bainbridge and dedicated by Bishop Chandler, the Rector of Bentley and former Bishop of Bloemfontein. This war memorial holds significant historical and cultural importance, both locally and nationally, and has group value with several nearby listed buildings.
