Description

The war memorial, located in the churchyard of St Mary's, was erected in 1921 by Isaac Taylor of Taylor & Young to commemorate those who served in the First World War, with dates for the Second World War added later. It features a Portland stone cross mounted on a stepped octagonal plinth, which is based on Sir Reginald Blomfield's Cross of Sacrifice. The cross has a tapering shape and a stepped base, with a bronze sword attached to the front (east) face.

The inscriptions on the memorial are significantly weathered, but a carved band around the top of the base originally read, "In loving and thankful memory of the men of this Parish who died in the Great War." An additional inscription on the east face, which is now illegible, originally stated, "The Souls of the Righteous are in the hands of God." The west face of the base displays the carved dates "1914-1919" and "1939-45" in stylised numerals. The memorial is situated immediately to the south-west of the churchyard's Grade II listed entrance and to the north-east of the Grade I listed St Mary's Church.
