Description
The grave slab of James Lancashire is a rectangular sandstone piece located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. It features deep incised carvings, including a double border and a crenellated band at the top. This band has raised arches at each end and in the center, beneath which is an angel's head with large outstretched wings on either side. The slab bears an italicized inscription that reads: "Here is Interred the Bodies of/ James Lancashire of Langley/ Gent who Departed this life Nov 11th/ 1737 Aged 71/ Also Alice his Wife Died July 2nd 1747/ Aged 79 Years/ Also Josiah Lancashire of Bowlee/ who Departed this life October 24th/ 1729 Aged 52 Also Mary his Wife." Additionally, there are further mid-18th century, non-italicized names inscribed below.
