Description
This is a rectangular grave slab made of sandstone, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. It features incised carvings, including a decorative border. At the foot of the slab, there is a large scroll motif containing a diamond, with the initials 'J.S.' above it, which may refer to the stonemason. The main inscription is in widely spaced lettering and reads, "Here resteth the Body of/ Mary The Wife of John/ Lancashire of Prestwich/ Bur March 27th 1672." There is an additional inscription in a different style of widely spaced lettering that states, "Alfo the Body of John/ Lancafhire of Bowlee/ who was Buried Sept 23rd 1711/ Alfo of Ann his Wife/ Buried October 31st 1726." Below these inscriptions, further family names from the 18th and 19th centuries have been added in smaller writing and standard lettering.
