Description

This is a grave slab dated 1695, made of gritstone, located 1 metre south of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary in Kettlewell. The slab is now set into the ground but may have originally been placed inside the church. The inscription is heavily weathered and divided into three sections. The top section features 11 lines, which are worn down on the right side but well incised on the left, reading: "HERE LIETH THE BODY OF/ ?M_ ME ... THE WIFE /OF.M. . . /CHUR...TO/CROSFEL?RELICT OF/ & TO.H...WYYIL...ID/DAUGH.TO MARM.../OF ?BUKTON CONST K/ ART. WHOE DIED 17.../ WAS BURIED .20 OF JUNE/1695 AN AET 49".

The central panel includes incised lines with scrolls at the corners and contains three lines that are only partly legible: "FROM...IT WAS/DEC?IDED A IVBILEE/SH?OULD THEN SUCCED". The lower part of the slab features a recessed shield inscribed with a pattern of linked squares and four lines: "?OSWI/MORI/ERGO DOMUM/MARSTUS". Below this, the letters "H ? I I" are present. The slab is edged with a fillet and roll moulding.
