Description

The Church of St. Mary is a Grade II* listed church located in Kettlewell with Starbotton. The tower was built in 1820 by Thomas Anderson, while the nave and chancel were constructed between 1882 and 1885 by T.H. and F. Healey. The church features coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a graduated stone slate roof.

The structure includes a three-bay nave with a south porch, a three-bay chancel, and a west tower that has three stages. The tower's south door has a plain surround with a keyed round arch, and there is a fanlight with interlaced glazing bars in a plain surround at the first stage. The belfry stage has a projecting band and large pointed windows with wooden louvres and hoodmoulds, topped with a battlemented parapet and corner pinnacles.

The gabled south porch features a deeply moulded pointed arch, while the nave and chancel windows are in the perpendicular style, with flat heads in the nave and pointed heads in the chancel. The east window has five lights, and the gable copings are adorned with cross finials.

Inside, the nave roof is supported by six collar beam trusses on corbels, and the chancel ceiling is painted with shields and chevrons. A wide chancel arch leads into the chancel. There are three notable mid-20th century stained glass windows commemorating those who died in the two world wars, one of which is signed by William Morris from 1953, all featuring contemporary detail. The font, likely retooled from the 13th century, is circular with roll moulding and corner acanthus-type stiff leaf ornament, standing on four chamfered legs.
