Description
This grave slab, dating from around 1708, is a memorial to James Thompson of Bolton, who died on December 17, 1708, at the age of 57. It is made of ashlar and features a finely-carved decorative surround with an arched head, a skull keystone, and hour-glasses in the imposts. The spandrels are adorned with winged-headed angels. The slab is located next to the south-west angle buttress of the tower of the Church of St. Wilfrid and is part of a notable group of similarly decorated grave slabs found in various local graveyards, particularly in the graveyard of the Church of St Mary-in-the-Wood in Morley.
