Description
The building is a large pair of semi-detached houses, dating from the mid-18th century, with a rear service block added around 1800. Constructed of well-coursed dressed stone to the front, hammer-dressed stone to the sides and rear, it has a stone slate roof. The houses are three storeys and have attics, and are arranged as a double-depth plan with a symmetrical six-bay facade. Architectural details include raised chamfered quoins, first- and second-floor bands, an eaves cornice, and coped gables with kneelers and end stacks. The central two bays feature identical doorways with architraves, pulvinated friezes, and cornices. Windows have raised square surrounds and retain 16-pane sashes, except those on the second floor, which have smaller windows with 20-pane sashes. The rear elevation is plainer, featuring recessed, flat-faced mullion windows. One side return has similar windows and blocked taking-in doors to each upper floor. The other side return, which faces into the churchyard and is open to public view, has four ground-floor windows mirroring the front facade (some blocked), and a few windows to the upper-floor outer bays.
Inside, the stair-halls contain relatively late staircases separated by a thick stone wall, with each hall partitioned from the front parlours by another stone wall. Rear rooms feature two spine beams with run-out stops and corner fireplaces. The building is a notable example of early semi-detached housing, distinguished by its fine stone detailing and prominent location next to the church.
