Description

Calverley Methodist Church is a Methodist chapel built in 1872. It features hammer-dressed stone and a Welsh blue-slate roof. The building is two storeys high with a three-bay symmetrical facade. The central bay has a pediment and is flanked by lower single-storey canted bays that contain staircases. The semicircular-arched portal has a keystone, and the lintel displays the date of construction, flanked by small arched windows with an impost band. Above the portal, there are three arched windows with keystones and an impost band, along with a circular carved stone inscribed with "PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL." Each outer bay has a window with two round-arched lights supported by a column mullion with a water-leaf capital, and the keystone and impost band are supported on three brackets. A bracketed band and low parapet are decorated with roundels. The left and right returns, which are slightly set back from the front, have five bays with sill bands, segmental-arched windows on the ground floor, and round-arched windows with keystones and an impost band on the first floor. The building also features moulded gutter brackets.

Inside, the chapel retains its original pine pews and an oval gallery with box pews supported by cast-iron columns. The ribbed ceiling has three large circular bosses, with the central boss being larger and featuring a guilloche border. The gallery windows are adorned with architraves and Art Nouveau stained glass.
