Description
Lodge Farmhouse is a house built in 1881, with internal woodwork initialled by James Maggerison. It features hammer-dressed stone and a stone slate roof, designed in a Vernacular Revival style. The house has a central-entry plan with two cells and is two storeys high. On the first floor, there are three windows, all double-chamfered mullioned windows. The first cell includes a four-light window with a three-light window above, and a stilted arched doorway with a moulded surround, original oak door with iron fittings, and a glazed fanlight. To the right is a narrow window with an ogee lintel and a single light above. The second cell has a five-light window with a three-light window above. There is a continuous cyma-moulded hoodmould on the ground floor and coved eaves. The roof is swept pyramidal with a central ball finial, and there are end external chimneys made of ashlar with offsets and cornices. The rear features a four-light window with a three-light window above to the left of a blocked doorway with a chamfered surround and broach stop, and a single light to the right with a cross stair-window above that has octagonal lead lights, along with a two-light window above. The house also has a lateral stack and a dormer with a small timbered king-post gable.
Inside, the farmhouse boasts a fine oak-timbered interior with good 17th-century-style panelling in most rooms, including the chambers. The first cell has a wide fireplace with a heavily carved segmental-arched bressumer that bears the date. The original owner was a timber merchant.
