Description
The war memorial in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church was built around 1920 and is made of Portland stone. It features a tall cross that stands on a triple stepped plinth. The dates 1914 and 1919 are engraved on the left and right arms of the cross, respectively. Between these dates is a well-carved emblem depicting two crossed rifles within a wreath. The names of the fallen soldiers are inscribed down the west shaft, with additional names from the Second World War. Notably, the first casualty listed was likely a member of the British Expeditionary Force, killed shortly after British troops arrived in the field. The lowest plinth has the inscription "Their name liveth for evermore" on its west side, while the next plinth up reads "European War" in plain script. This memorial is striking and has a severe, modern style, featuring strong carving and lettering that hold both historical significance and architectural value.
