Description
36 and 36A College Street is a 17th-century timber-framed house that has undergone significant alterations. The ground floor is brick, while the first floor is clad in fishscale tiles. The roof is hipped and covered with clay tiles, featuring a central brick chimney. The windows are largely from the 19th century and modern, and a south bay is a modern extension designed to match the original style. A modern shop projection obscures part of the north bay and extends forward to a north stable bay dating to the 18th century.
The rear elevation includes a modern brick wing to the south, the 18th-century brick stable to the north, and the original three-bay house between. The original house features three gabled dormers along a pent roof, now supported by a modern brick rear wall with large glazed openings. Inside, original posts, beams, and ties are visible. The roof is ceiled at purlin level and retains much of its original structure with triple queen post and collar beam trusses.
