Description

The Cottage is a house with a rear bay likely dating from the 16th century, a front bay from the 17th century, and a 19th-century extension to the left. The 17th-century bay has a timber frame with exposed herringbone brick infill to the first floor front, while the ground floor and right gable were rebuilt in flint and brick. The rear wing retains timber framing. The 19th-century bay is brick, roughcast to the front and left side. The roof is tiled, and there are brick chimneys between the older bays and to the left. The house is in an L-shape, with a small 20th-century extension in the rear angle. The two-storey front range has two bays, the left being gabled. The left bay has wooden casement windows: two to the ground floor, one to the first floor, and a blind flint roundel with a keyed brick surround in the gable. The right bay also has wooden casements, a three-light window to the ground floor and a two-light window with glazing bars above. The rear bay contains a door, a casement window, and a small gabled dormer. Inside, timber framing remains in the internal walls, with heavy diagonal wall braces in the front bay. A winder stair is located in line with the fireplace in the rear of the 17th-century bays, and the rear bay has arched wind braces, and was possibly once an open hall.
