Description

The Flat Roofed House is a house dating from 1934, designed by Colin Lucas for Mrs. M. Sewell. It is a well-preserved example of a small house in the International Modern Style. The construction incorporates a reinforced concrete slab roof with a large overhang on the garden front. The ground floor plan is arranged around a living room, facing southwest, with a kitchen and boiler room at either end. The smaller first floor contains bedrooms that open onto small roof terraces at both ends. Originally, the windows were steel casements and fixed lights, although these have been replaced in the kitchen, living room, and boiler room with aluminium windows of a compatible design by Lucas. The symmetrically arranged garden front features three bays of 3:2:3 panes on each storey. The service rooms project forward and are blank on this front. The entrance front includes a small glazed, flat-roofed porch on the left, from which a diagonal cantilevered staircase rises, featuring a raking strip window. There are flush garage doors on the right. The interior is plain, with a fire surround made of flat slabs of travertine and maple wood flooring. The upstairs floors are of compressed sawdust. Flush doors retain original door furniture.
