Description

The Old College, now Council Offices, was built in 1729. It is a three-storey, five-window house constructed with red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, highlighted by purple headers. The building features a slightly projecting central section and angle pilasters, with decorative bands marking the first and second floors. A stone cornice sits above, topped by a brick parapet with recessed panels. The sash windows have glazing bars within flush, box frames, and are set within gauged brick arches. A restored entrance features three steps leading to a door with a cornice head, a patterned, rectangular fanlight, and a moulded architrave under a cornice hood supported by console brackets. An inscription on the frieze reads "Churcher's College 1729". The rear of the building presents similar brickwork but features older windows with mullioned and transomed leaded casements. One-storey and attic wings were added to either side. Inside, a staircase with a combination of spiral turned and reeded balusters on each tread, a ramped handrail, and a cut string is present. A panelled staircase wall is accented by reeded pilasters.
