Description

The Good Intent is a public house located on College Street, dating from the 16th century, with elements likely from the 18th century. The building has undergone significant restoration, featuring a renewed tiled roof and a tile-hung gable end facing the street. It consists of two storeys and an attic, with 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor and a modern four-light window on the ground floor, which is made of brick.

The central section of the building is two storeys tall, topped with a high-pitched, undulating tiled roof. The left section, known as No 40, is an earlier 18th-century addition, also two storeys with one window, and has a high-pitched, hipped roof covered in modern tiles. The doors and windows in this part have been renewed. The central section displays square timber framing with brick infill and has three windows, while No 42 and part of No 44 feature flush-framed modern casements. The doors are plain plank types set in wooden box frames, with one 18th-century sliding sash window on the ground floor to the right.

Inside, the building reveals visible square framing and numerous beams, some of which have stop-chamfered edges. There is a narrow newel staircase, old oak plank flooring, and one room with close-studding.
