Description
The Baechus, formerly known as West Meon Stores House, is a house that once served as both a residence and a shop. It dates back to the 17th century or earlier and features a refronting from the early 19th century along with a rear wing. Part of the property has a flying freehold with an adjoining late 20th-century building to the west, which is not of special interest.
The exterior has rendered walls with a plinth on the front elevation. The east end elevation showcases tile-hanging above exposed timber framing, with painted brick infill. The rear elevation is constructed of painted brickwork in Flemish Garden Wall bond. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles, featuring an off-center brick chimneystack. There is a catslide roof at the rear, which includes another brick chimneystack, and the lower rear wing also has a hipped roof.
The south or front elevation is two stories high and has three windows. The upper floor features sliding sash windows, while the ground floor has two sashes in exposed frames—one with 16 panes on the right side and one with 12 panes on the left side. There is also a projecting square bay from the west side that dates to the 20th century. The entrance has a thin wooden doorcase with a pediment, frieze, pilasters, and a six-panelled door aligned with the chimneystack.
