Description

117 Fore Street is a house with a shop on the ground floor and living accommodation above. It dates from the 17th century or earlier but was re-fronted around 1800. The front elevation is made of Flemish bond brick, and it has a slate roof that is hipped at the left end, featuring one handmade ridge tile. There are end stacks with brick shafts, including a 17th-century shaft made of handmade bricks on the right end, and a rear left corner stack with a brick shaft. The left side and rear elevations are rendered, with the rear possibly being timber-framed.

The building has a deep plot with a rear yard, suggesting it may have originally been a deep-plan structure of the gallery-and-back-block type, although the rear service block is missing. The ground floor interior has been gutted for shop use, with a rise in floor level to the rear room.

The exterior consists of three storeys and has an asymmetrical front with two bays. It features a 20th-century shop front that includes a central glazed door with a low panel, a glazed overlight, and plate glass shop windows. There are two 12-pane hornless sash windows from around 1800 on the first and second floors, with brick voussoirs above. The left return, visible from a narrow alleyway, is rendered and has sash windows and a side door. The wall continues as a boundary to the back yard, which includes two redundant volcanic trap corbels that may have once supported an arched doorway. The rear elevation is also rendered and features a first-floor glazed verandah.

Inside, the rear room has a rough, chamfered crossbeam. This building is one of the early houses on Fore Street, although its age is somewhat obscured by the alterations made to the front elevation.
