Description

No. 144 Fore Street is an early 19th century building of three storeys, originally with a ground floor shop. The front facade is characterised by a segmental bow window on the first floor and a square bay above. The corners are defined by panelled quoins. Rendered surfaces are punctuated by pilasters. A balustraded parapet tops the building, and the roof is hidden. The structure behind the visible front may be of older date, and is thought to include a gable and a balustraded gallery. A first-floor room contains a 17th-century ceiling decorated with animals, birds, fish, and foliage, divided into compartments by moulded beams with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. Nos. 140 to 144 Fore Street form a group of buildings of group value. 19th-century alterations have occurred.
