Description
40 Market Hill is a house that was once used as a shop, dating from the 17th century and early 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with a rendered brick front and a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a three-window range. There are two gabled dormers that contain cross-pattern-glazed two-light casements. The eaves cornice is moulded and painted timber. On the first floor, there are recessed 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has a 20th-century boarded door and a long projecting fascia above two square shop-window bays. Each bay has 16 small panes over four larger panes and sloping back soffits. At the rear, there are two parallel gabled two-storey ranges that are at right angles to the front, featuring 20th-century casement windows and a stack in the central valley.
Inside, the front range has a first floor with substantial bridging joists and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, along with small joists, most of which are reused. The rear wall has large posts on either side of an inglenook fireplace that has a curved back and mantel beam. On the first floor, part of the rear wall is adorned with early 19th-century pine panelling, which includes two cupboard doors with L-hinges and an opening for a fireplace. The staircase features a short length of handrail with barleysugar balusters.
