Description
This building, comprising numbers 42 and 44 Market Hill, is a public house, now converted into flats, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is timber-framed with a front facade of grey brick in a header bond pattern, accented with red brick dressings. The roof is of an M-profile, covered with plain tiles, and features a large central stack in the valley.
The building is two storeys with an attic and a cellar, and has a three-window front. Two dormers with gabled fronts and two-light casement windows appear to be a later addition. The first floor features a moulded cornice and three sash windows. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front with a fascia and two cant-sided plate-glass windows, alongside a recessed central doorway and a door leading to a passage. The rear elevation is rendered and incorporates a mixture of 20th-century casement windows, some aluminium framed, and two original gabled dormers.
The interior reveals a timber frame constructed from pine, likely imported, and demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship. The roof structure, based on 17th-century designs, includes A-frames, full-height main posts, and two parallel bridging joists on each floor. The major posts feature straight braces, while the stud infill is of lower quality timber, with some reused pieces.
