Description
37 Market Hill is a former public house, known as The Ship, now converted into flats. It dates from the 18th century and features a painted-brick exterior in English bond with a gambrel M-shaped roof covered in plain tiles and four stacks, one on each parapeted gable. The building has two storeys with an attic and cellar, and a five-window range. There are three 20th-century dormers, two of which have 4-light casements and one with two 2-light casements, with boarding in between. The eaves are moulded brick.
On the first floor, there are four sash windows, each with a moulded surround and a vertical glazing bar, along with a central window that has a semicircular head. The ground floor retains a 19th-century public-house front featuring a full-width hood or fascia supported by four pilasters with consoles at the ends. The central door has a blocked rectangular fanlight, flanked by two large plain tripartite sash windows.
At the rear, there are two gabled dormers, each with a 2-light casement. The rear wall is rendered, but the brickwork is exposed on the flank. There is a two-storey black weatherboarded extension with a slate lean-to roof. The first floor of the rear has two 16-pane sash windows, one of which has been altered. The ground floor has one similar window and one with a single vertical glazing bar. There are also single-storey 19th and 20th-century rear extensions.
Inside, there is a dogleg staircase with column-on-vase balusters and a column newel. The large cellar features a well-made timber floor above.
