Description
The Old Ship Inn is a public house, originally a house, dating from the 17th and early 18th centuries, with 20th-century additions. It is timber-framed with brick infill and has a roof with a half-hipped east end, covered in alternating bands of plain and shaped tiles, likely reused. A ridge stack is present. The core of the building follows a lobby-entry plan.
The north front has one and a half storeys and four bays, with the easternmost bay added in the 20th century. The front has exposed timbers and brick infill, heavily restored in the 20th century. A door is centrally positioned, sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch with a six-panel door. To the left of the door is a three-light casement window, followed by a two-light casement. To the right is a three-light casement. Above these windows are two gabled dormers, each with a three-light casement window. All casement windows are 20th-century replacements.
Inside, the main ground floor rooms feature chamfered main beams and joists. Two former service rooms are to the west, featuring simple joists and a straight-flight staircase in the northwest corner, potentially an 18th-century addition. The first floor retains substantial timbers. A fireplace was inserted into a first-floor room to the west, with the date 1706 inscribed on its lintel. The building is said to have a queen post roof, with traces of painted decoration on the beams, suggesting a possible earlier origin. Substantial 20th-century additions extend to the south and west. The building now forms part of the Old Ship Inn.
