Description
The Old Ship Inn is a former public house, likely built in the early 18th century with later additions. It features rendered and colorwashed walls, four brick chimneystacks, and a pantile roof, with a rectangular plan across two storeys.
The main southeast front has a five-window arrangement, including four casements and a 20th-century window on the first floor. The ground floor has a similar arrangement of casements along with a later bow window. The main doorway is off-center and deeply recessed, with a half-glazed door accessed by a flight of three steps. There is a secondary door to the left. The right gable end has early 19th-century sash windows with a 6/6 configuration, while the left gable features a later lean-to extension. At the rear, there are single-storey extensions, one of which has a catslide roof.
Historically, there is a reference to a licensed premises called the Passage Boat from 1702, which may refer to this building. By 1730, it was known as The Ship, or Old Ship, a name it has kept. This public house is a well-preserved example of a typical local vernacular building.
