Description
The garden wall and gate piers at Milford House Hotel date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from limestone and sandstone rubble with brick facing towards the hotel’s garden. The gate piers are made of ashlar and feature copings. The wall is approximately 75 meters long and forms the northern boundary of the hotel's drive and gardens. At the west end, there are outer and inner gate piers. The outer piers have plinths supporting square shafts with punched panels and pyramidal caps. The inner piers, located at the entrance to the garden front, are more elaborate, featuring ashlar caps with gablets and small ball finials. About 20 meters of the wall runs along the north side of the drive between the two pairs of gate piers and has triangular copings. At the inner piers, the wall rises to over 2 meters in height with flat copings and becomes serpentine for the remainder of its length. This structure is an important feature in the garden setting of Milford House Hotel.
