SK2168 MILL STREET 831-1/4/135 (East side) 20/05/74 Garden Wall and gate piers at Milford House Hotel

GV II

Gate piers and garden wall. Probably early C19. Limestone and sandstone rubble with brick facing towards the garden of Milford House Hotel (qv); ashlar gate piers and copings. Wall approximately 75m in length forming north boundary to drive and gardens of the hotel. Outer and inner gate piers at west end. Gate piers: outer piers have plinths to square shafts with punched panels and pyramidal caps; the inner piers at entrance to garden front are more elaborate having ashlar caps with gablets and small ball finials. Wall: approximately 20m of wall on north side of drive between the 2 pairs of gatepiers; triangular copings. At the inner piers the wall steps up to over 2m in height and has flat copings and also becomes serpentine for its remaining lenght. Forms an important element in the garden setting of the Milford House Hotel (qv).
