Description
Arkwright Square, located on Mill Street in Bakewell, is a group of industrial housing that includes Arkwright Cottage and two unnamed cottages. These buildings date from the late 18th century and have been altered over time. They are constructed of rubble limestone with sandstone dressings and feature a graduated slate roof with rolled-lead ridges.
The exterior consists of two storeys, with a five-window range facing Mill Street and a three-window range facing Buxton Road. The houses are arranged around three sides of a courtyard. Notable features include large quoins, flush sills, and plain lintels, along with various 20th-century part-glazed and boarded doors.
On the Mill Street side, there is a near-central segmental archway with quoins, two doorways to the left, and one to the right. To the right of the door, there are 30-pane casements, and a small casement is found on each floor to the left. The Buxton Road front has three doorways, with a 30-pane casement on the ground floor of Arkwright Cottage on the left, and otherwise features 3-light and 2-light casements with glazing bars. The facade of the unnamed house on the right has been rebuilt, and its openings lack glazing. The roof has a hipped angle, with brick ridge stacks and end stacks that have coved ashlar cornices.
Corner House, which is taller, is attached to the rear of Corner Cottage and features a stable-type door and casements with glazing bars, as well as a red tile roof with a brick end stack that has a coved cornice. Rose Cottage is located at the rear of the yard, with a door to the left of three casements on each floor designed in the style of horizontally-sliding sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
