Description

Numbers 49-69 (odd) with the building adjacent to Number 49 is a row of eleven houses, likely built in the 1830s with later alterations, designed for workers in the Arkwright mills. The row ascends Cromford Hill and features six different roof levels. The construction is of coursed rubble, with Welsh slate roofs on Nos 59, 61, and 65, while the others have corrugated concrete tiling. These houses are a 2-storey variant of the Arkwright Phase I type, featuring side stairs against the end and party walls, and 2-bay front elevations, with the entrance bay lacking a window above. The original windows likely had cambered arches, and original openings are still visible in Nos 51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 63, and 67 (both floors), as well as Nos 49 and 67 (first floor) and 61 (ground floor); however, the lintels are damaged on No. 65. The doorways have massive rectangular lintels of inverted T section, with the one on No. 69 renewed. Most doors are half-glazed, and there are 20th-century casement windows. Red and black brick ridge stacks are present. The building attached to No. 49 includes two doorways to the street, loft access, and a doorway to the end wall. The rear elevation features small one and two-light windows in stone surrounds on the first floors, with some early windows and doorways still surviving on the ground floor. There are 19th-century wings on Nos 49 and 65, along with some 20th-century additions. Two privy blocks at the end of the gardens, which are understood to contain early thunderboxes, are included in this listing. Despite alterations, these houses maintain their general characteristics and represent an important phase in the development of Cromford's industrial housing. They are contemporary with Nos 73-91, Cromford Hill.
