Description

The Bell Inn, incorporating numbers 47 Cromford Hill and 31 North Street, is a public house dating to the late 1780s and approximately 1800. It comprises two distinct elements under a single roofline. Number 47, constructed of coursed ashlar, is likely from the late 1780s, while the public house corner section appears to be a rebuilding from around 1800, built of small bricks in irregular bond and featuring a low stone plinth. The roof is hipped at the North Street end and is tiled.

The corner public house section has a one-window end wall facing North Street, with an entrance beneath a stone canopy. Sash windows are above, with a cambered arch over the first-floor window. A two-light casement window is located on the ground floor to the left. The elevation to Cromford Hill features a two-window range, with the left-hand window on each upper floor being blank, while the others have sash windows. The first-floor sashes are set beneath cambered arches. Three small 20th-century windows are present on the ground floor. Number 47 has a right-hand room which forms a half-basement set into the hillside. Ground and first-floor windows are set beneath lintels of a type associated with Arkwright Phase II architecture, featuring rectangular blocks of inverted T section, and possess four-paned horns. A low wing to the rear of the building comprises two later additions, with doors and ground-floor windows under massive lintels, and includes one surviving Yorkshire sash window. A low outbuilding is also situated at the rear. See also the listing entry for numbers 30 and 31 North Street, Cromford.
