Description

Nos 30 and 31 are two houses, with No 30 also functioning as a former shop and No 31 being part of a public house with a dwelling above. They likely date from the late 18th century and have undergone some alterations. The buildings are constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and feature a tiled roof with stone copings on the left gable. They rise to three storeys and have a plan similar to the Arkwright phase I type, displaying two-bay elevations. The entrance bay has no windows above, while the other bay contains sash windows on each floor, with the first-floor windows featuring cambered arches. No 30 has a bay window for the shop, topped with a hipped slate roof, and No 31 has a doorway with a renewed stone surround. At the rear, No 30 extends to occupy a small stone cottage that has been partially rebuilt in brick, featuring a doorway, a horizontally-sliding sash window, and other windows facing a passage off Cromford Hill. This rear wing connects to "The Back Shop," and together with The Bell Inn, the various premises create a small courtyard.
