Description

These are two unnumbered houses situated on the north side of North Street, Cromford, between number 1 North Street and number 45 Cromford Hill. They likely date from the mid-18th century, although they were not numbered on the Tithe Map of 1841. The bonding between the right-hand house and number 1 North Street suggests that the right-hand house predates number 1. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble with tiled roofs and have two brick ridge stacks.

The left-hand house originally served as an inn and may have begun as a three-room farmhouse. It features a three-window range with a blocked doorway between the two left window bays. The upper floor has one casement window and two sash windows; the ground floor has one horned sash window and two 20th-century casement windows. The right-hand house presents as a two-window range, with windows set in early openings, now with 20th-century glazing bars. The rear of the buildings includes external steps and ventilator openings. The left-hand house forms an annexe to the unnumbered house at the left end of The Arkwright Houses.
