Description

Two houses, likely dating from the 18th century or earlier and predating the major housing developments in Cromford associated with Richard Arkwright. They are constructed of roughly coursed rubble stone, with a tiled roof to number 78 and concrete tile to number 80. The rooflines are different, and the end walls are distinguished by prominent stone coping, indicating that the roofs were originally slabbed or thatched. There are rendered stone end stacks, and a red and black brick ridge stack to number 80. Both houses have a regular two-window front. They feature two-light mullioned windows with 20th-century casements. A large rectangular stone lintel sits above the doorway of number 80, which has 20th-century part-glazed doors. Stone extensions are visible at the rear. Inside number 76 is a large fireplace with a stone lintel. Number 80 was previously listed individually on November 3, 1986, but the two houses are now listed together as serial number 1/121.
