Description
Scarsdale House Farmhouse and the attached barn date from 1723. The farmhouse is built of rubble limestone, with cement rendering, gritstone dressings, and quoins. It features a Welsh slate roof with stone coped gables, moulded and plain kneelers, and a ball finial. There are two stone ridge stacks and a stone gable end stack. The building is two storeys high, with a double fronted south elevation. The central doorway has a moulded stone surround with the date WM 1723 inscribed on the lintel, and a bracketed stone hood above. The door is a 20th-century half glazed type. On either side of the doorway are windows with stone surrounds and 19th-century casement lights, which likely originally had mullions. There are three similar windows on the upper floor. An attached drystone garden wall features rounded copings. Inside, there is a standard 18th-century fireplace with a bracketed stone lintel and a staircase with flat fretted balusters. The barn, attached to the east, has a continuous roof and an irregular south elevation that includes a cart entrance and four partially blocked doorways with segmental heads, along with three openings above that also have segmental heads.
