Description

Strange's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1744, with alterations made in the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, featuring stone dressings on the right side, and has a stone slate roof. The building is designed in an L-shape, with two storeys and an attic, and includes integral brick end stacks. On the left side, there are two gabled dormers with 2-light wooden casements. The facade consists of 2:1:1 bays with glazing bar sashes. The three right-hand bays have boxed sashes with horns and segmental brick relieving arches, while the right-hand bay features 16-pane sashes with stone cills. The mid-19th century four-panelled door has beaded flush lower panels, a margin-light rectangular overlight, and a doorcase with panelled pilaster strips and shaped brackets supporting a flat hood. A flush datestone on the first floor, between the second and third bays from the left, is inscribed "fill(love heart)E/1744". At the rear, there is a two-storey wing with an integral brick end stack. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have an early 19th century staircase with stick balusters and internal panelled window shutters. The right-hand bay was likely added in the early 19th century, as indicated by the different sashes, stone dressings, and a possible straight joint.

Additionally, there is a barn dating from the 18th century, built of roughly squared and coursed limestone rubble with stone dressings and a 20th-century machine tile roof. The barn has three bays and is oriented at right angles to the road. It features central opposed cart entrances, with the roof sweeping down over a short porch to the north. There is a pair of 20th-century plywood-covered doors to the north, and triangular-shaped vents in the sides of the western bay and three in the gable end facing the road. The interior has collar-and-tie-beam trusses. The barn is included for its group value with the farmhouse.
