Description

Dore's Cottage is a house located on Finstock High Street, dated 1666, with an addition from the 18th century and alterations from the late 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a thatched roof, while the addition has a machine tile roof. It has a T-plan layout with a two-unit range and a central wing at the front, along with a later addition to the right. The cottage is one storey and attic high, with two storeys in the addition. There are integral dressed stone end stacks and a dormer on the right with a 17th-century two-light chamfered mullioned wooden casement, which was relocated in the late 20th century. A small ground floor window to the right has a wooden lintel, and there are 20th-century boarded doors on the left and right, also with wooden lintels. The central gabled wing features a 20th-century two-light wooden attic casement, and above it is a moulded datestone inscribed "WC/1666". The right-side addition has a three-light wooden casement. At the rear, there are three square eaves dormers with two- and three-light wooden casements, and two ground-floor three-light wooden casements flanking a central two-light casement, all with wooden lintels. A 20th-century boarded door is located to the left of the central window, and the left addition has a small dormer and a ground-floor three-light casement. Inside, the right-hand ground-floor room features chamfered spine beams and joists, and there are large open fireplaces with wooden lintels in both the left and right-hand rooms. A 17th-century winder stair is located at the rear of the right-hand stack, and the right-hand first-floor rear room has a 17th-century stone corner fireplace with a moulded cornice.
