Description
Litton School is a building constructed in 1865 by H Cockbain of Manchester. It is made of coursed squared limestone with gritstone dressings and features a stone slate roof with stone coped gables and moulded kneelers. The school has a stone gable end stack and a gabled bellcote. The front is a single storey, while the rear has two storeys. The south elevation consists of two gabled bays.
The right-hand bay contains a doorway with a moulded stone surround and a four-centred head, which is set within a square head. It has a plank door and a hoodmould that connects to a horizontal dripmould extending over a single light window on each side, both of which have trefoil headed lights. Above this is a five-light window with a four-centred arch and trefoil headed lights, along with a clock set in a moulded stone surround.
The left bay features a five-light mullioned window with pointed cusped lights under a flat head, and a drip mould beneath the sill. Above this window is a statue in a niche with a projecting moulded surround that includes Gothic details. The building is supported by buttresses at the angles.
