Description

Tanyard Farmhouse and Barn is a farmhouse and barn dating from the 17th century, with early 18th-century alterations and minor 20th-century changes. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. It has a concrete tiled roof with raised stone coped gables and two gable moulded ashlar stacks. The left range has a pantile roof.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with a garret and has a three-bay front that includes a cornice and kneelers. The entrance is an off-centre six-panel door set within an early 18th-century eared stone architrave, complete with a stepped keyblock. This door is flanked by three light 20th-century casements with flat heads and a detached keystone above. To the left of the door, there is a small fireside window. On the first floor, a central 20th-century stone mullioned two-light window is flanked by single three-light mullioned windows, all featuring ovolo moulded mullions and leaded lights.

To the left, there is a lower single-storey range with attics, which has a three-bay layout. This includes a two-light casement with a flat head and keystone, a three-light casement with a timber lintel, and 20th-century double doors. The roof features three raking dormers. Adjacent to the left is a barn and stable range with two planked doors under timber lintels and vertical breathers.

Inside, the farmhouse features simply chamfered beams with run-out stops, an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, and an 18th-century niche with a curved back. The interior also includes dado panelling, a limestone flagged floor, six-panelled doors, and panelled reveals. The right-hand room has full-height early 18th-century panelling and a cupboard, along with a carved slate late 18th-century fireplace surround adorned with urns, scrolls, and flowers. There is a long narrow cellar with ashlar side walls and a brick vault, featuring five shallow niches on both side walls. The first floor has timber-framed partitions, and in one upstairs room, there is an early 18th-century fireplace surround with roll moulded imposts and a flat arch with curved corners.
