Description
Nos. 39 and 41, High Street are a pair of houses dating from the 17th century, with alterations around 1800 and minor 20th-century changes. The houses were originally one dwelling, now divided. They are constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with large ashlar quoins and dressings, and have a pantile roof with one stone-coped gable and two 20th-century gable stacks and a single ridge red brick stack. The two-storey building with a garret has a four-bay front, with the left-hand bay recessed and the second bay from the left slightly recessed and with its own gable. The front has two half-glazed doors under timber lintels. To the left of the doors is a two-light mullioned window and a three-light glazing bar casement, and to the right a two-light sliding sash window. On the first floor are two three-light glazing bar casements, a two-light sliding sash window, and a two-light mullioned window. A similar blocked window is in the garret. The left-hand side of the front has a blocked four-centred arched opening and single three-light mullioned windows to each floor. All mullioned windows have cavetto moulded mullions, cornices, and leaded lights. Internally, there are chamfered beams with shield-shaped stops.
