Description

Castle Farmhouse and the attached barn date from the 17th century and were remodeled and extended in the 18th century. They feature a continuous roof and are constructed from coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings. The building has quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, a chamfered eaves band, reconstructed intermediate and end ridge stacks, and a roof covered with 20th-century concrete tiles, which replaced the original stone slate.

The farmhouse has a 'T' plan with a rear wing and an east end added in the 18th century. The south elevation is three storeys high with irregular window placement. Most windows are 2-light flush mullions with extended heads and cills, featuring 20th-century glazing. There is a former 4-light chamfer mullion window on the second floor, now modified to a single mullion with glazing bar casements. The building has two doorways with massive surrounds and a 2-light chamfer mullioned window on the north elevation.

The attached barn at the west end is also made of rubble limestone with gritstone dressings and has similar architectural features, including a coped west gable with moulded kneelers and a 20th-century concrete tile roof. The west elevation presents an irregular facade with stone surrounds for the door and window openings. Inside, the barn contains three debased king post trusses with curved principals and trenched double purlins that support the former stone slated roof.
