Description
Forest Lodge Farmhouse and attached byre date from the 19th century. The farmhouse was built in 1859, with the name "L. Dale" inscribed on a panel in the lintel. The byre was constructed in 1867, also by L. Dale. The farmhouse is built of finely-coursed, herringbone-tooled sandstone with a pantiled roof featuring stone copings, kneelers and stacks. The main front has a symmetrical design with two storeys and three windows, characterised by wide proportions. It has 16-pane sash windows with heavy flush lintels and projecting sills. An attic light is visible in the left return, and a fire window sits on the ground floor. The original entrance is at the rear, giving onto the farmyard, and consists of a central, panelled door now enclosed within a porch linking the farmhouse to the attached byre. The rear elevation features irregular window placement. Inside, the farmhouse appears largely unaltered, retaining original features such as four-panel doors, panelled shutters, moulded cornices, and a ceiling rose. A marbled chimneypiece with an arched iron fireplace is also present.
The byre is a single-storey structure with a basement at the west end, reflecting the sloping ground. It comprises six irregular bays and includes two Dutch doors, a plain boarded door on the right side, two small windows, two loft doors, and two blocked chutes at basement level on the left. The openings are characterised by heavy lintels, mainly with a slightly shouldered design, and rebates for doors.
